How to Calculate Power Usage

To calculate how much energy an appliance consumes, you multiply its power draw (Watts) by the time it runs (Hours), and then divide by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours (kWh).

kWh = Watts × Hours ÷ 1,000For multiple items:kWh = Watts × Quantity × Hours ÷ 1,000

Watts measure the instantaneous power it draws. kWh measures the total energy consumed over time. Your utility bills you for energy (kWh).

Worked Example

A 500 W appliance running for 4 hours:

500 W × 4 hours

= 2,000 Wh

= 2 kWh

If your electricity costs $0.15/kWh:

Electricity Cost = kWh × Rate

Air conditioner usage varies drastically based on the size (BTUs or tons), the temperature setting, and how often the compressor cycles on. A small window AC might draw 500–1000 watts while cooling, whereas a central AC might draw 3000–5000 watts.
